18 years ago today we ended Wigan's dominance in the Challenge Cup.
It's one of my best memories from The Willows.

| I remember it well.
As I walked into the Weaste after the game I was drunk and hadn't even had a drop. It was my best ever game in the best part of 40 years watching our great game. 
Let's hope we can have a few more in the near future!! |

I know it's easy to say after the event but from the moment I heard the draw, I just knew we would end Wigan's 10 year Wembley cup run. This has to be my best ever day as Salford supporter by some distance.

I remember telling my mother in law before the game we would beat Wigan, and she said she would eat her hat if we did, and after the game telling to eat it!

Missed it as, just as i was setting off, we were told my father-in-law had fallen down stairs, broken his leg, and was in hospital.
The journey from Rochdale to Sheffield went via the Willows so I could at least wish good luck to the event.
On a side note, at the last game at Watersheddings, I was stood with some of the Kirwins. We smiled at the race by Oldham fans dig up turf from where the kick had been made.

As a follow on, please imagine the nurses' comments as they witnessed an old man, obviously in pain, with a leg in plaster and traction; two very upset daughters; and a man kneeling on the floor, the hospital radio to his ear, and pumping his clenched fists to the ceiling as he shouts "Yes, Thank You, God!"

In those days I was a touch judge, we were on duty that day at Sheffield Eagles, when we arrived the game had been postponed due to a speedway international. unfortunately Gary Hethrington had failed to inform us, the match officials, when we rang the RFL the reply was 'Oh he's done it again' we got half match fee plus expenses and got reassigned the game. Anyway we rushed back to Salford in time to see that great perfomance

What a day that was. Walking home down Eccles Old Road waving my 'Reds' flag at the Wigan coaches. I've still got all the papers from the Monday somewhere. Magic. |

Yep he broke through and steped around Gary Connolly I think (?) and lost a boot in the process. Amazing day and we could have won by even more, but had two tries disallowed for forward passes! |
