Full credit to Danny McGuire for calling out the current state of officiating, can't say I agree with him saying bring back the old guard, some of them were just as bad, but overall fully endorse what he's getting at.
The third official does seem to back up the on field ref. as much as he can. There is no way, however, that we will get rid of the video ref. and I don't really think decisions are really any better or worse than in the past. It is just that we can look at all decisions now as many times as we like.
It is only a few years back when all decisions (not on Sky Main Channel) were made by the ref. & his team ... there would have been some right howlers.
Cas were definitely hard done by. I reckon McGuire, though, is too intense for his team & his own health.
In the past they were just talking points. Now it’s become toxic because we can see when the ref and video ref have got it very wrong and feels like there is no accountability.
Refs have always got it wrong. So how would you make them more accountable? I'm sure Refs. study their decisions many times during the week & refs have been "rested" following some games. It will always remain a problem with no easy answer.
